The coral reefs

blue bay nov 2013 038
It might be because I live on an island, but the sea have always been very close to my heart. Nothing really compares to swimming in the ocean, to this feeling when you are diving and you watch the sun from under the water. When you see how the lights rays draw golden lines of light into the azure sea, you can’t help but to fall in love with the wonders created by Mother Earth.
I spent the end of last week at the seaside, being in the water as much as I can. I’ve been diving into Blue Bay’s marine park, a protected area in Mauritius where fishing is forbidden to protect the corals and fishes. I think that I’ve never swam with so many fishes ! When you were underwater, you just were in the middle of this big flock-like group of fishs : watch at your right, at your left, under your feet or above your head ,you could only see fishes everywhere.
I’ve been snorkeling at Blue Bay as much as I can in the last years. I’m happy to have seen that many different species of fishes last week while being there, and from what I’ve personally remarked the pollution of the lagoon , at least  from what I’ve saw  seems to have slowed down (yayyy ! ).
In front of all this beauty though, I couldn’t help to remember how much our oceans needs our help at the moment. Even if I’m happy to have witnessed so many wonders, I know that much is left to do to protect the oceans and it’s inhabitants.

I’ve always tried to keep myself informed about subject like this one, but it has been quite some time I didn’t really dive into the subject extensively. So, that’s what I did today. And I’d like share some infos, pages, stories […] linked to this topic that I found while wandering on the net today.

First, let’s focus on the coral reef, before focusing on other topic that could be linked to this subject ( like the Great Pacific garbage patch [ the name given to a 700,000 square kilometers to more than 15,000,000 square kilometers patch of garbage floating in the Pacific] for example ,we could actually really talk about a LOT on this topic ).

I’d like to add that : Everything in this world is interconnected, and I don’t think that as specie we can believe that what we do to other species and to our environment, won’t also affect us. That we can just go on about destroying the planet as we have been doing ( let’s face the truth, we really haven’t been good guests to our host the earth ) and believe that we won’t face the consequences of our actions (just in case you need a ‘good reason’ to believe that yes, protecting our coral reefs also concerns you). That being said I’d like to share with you this video I found that explore some of the threats the coral reefs face but also some of the reasons why coral reefs are important [It’s 5 min, and it’s really super easy to understand].

Some of the main problems that the coral reefs ,and the ocean in general faces are overfishing [ the overexploitation of fish stocks that can results in resource depletion, low biological growth rates, and critically low biomass levels ], pollution, climate change and acidification of the oceans.

[ To read more about the rising acidity of the ocean and how it affects the coral reefs : : http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/nature/coral-reefs-in-danger-of-being-destroyed-1908544.html ]

I don’t like to ponder too much on the ‘what’s going wrong’, I find that staring at the solutions helps more, though if you want to read more on the damages our oceans encounters at the moment, feel free to do some more researches 🙂 I’m sure you’ll find some more stuffs, I just don’t think that giving you just a whole bunch of links on ‘what’s going wrong’ would tremendously help. Let’s dwell more on what we can do to help !

The more I read about what can anyone do to help with this issue, the more I realize that really there’s some simple stuff that we ALL can do to help ! Here I tried to mix many of the lists I’ve saw on the topic  ‘what to do to protect our oceans’ [ I included a link to the original articles though, so you can also read it to have more extensive information. Learning more about a topic and becoming more informed is already a first step toward helping with that issue].

Learn more about what you eat when it comes to seafood : where it comes from, if this specie is not in a critical state because of overfishing, the fishing techniques used [ some fishing techniques are truly more destructive than others] […]

– If you smoke, carefully dispose of your cigarette butts. Do not leave it on the beach or in the water [I’ve personally witnessed someone doing that just some time ago] as they are dangerous for sea life ! Not only the filters contains harmful chemical ,some of the wildlife also mistake it for food and eat it; as they are unable to digest it they sometimes die from an accumulation of cigarette butts in their stomachs.

-Plastic. Just as the cigarette butts, a lot of wildlife can confound plastic for food and die from an accumulation of it in their stomach, they can also be trapped by the plastic objects. Using less plastics [- > uses re-usable stuffs! ] also helps the oceans and it’s inhabitants.

Clean up a beach ! A lot of plastics and other trash end up on the beach and in the sea, so why not organizing a beach clean up ? Or it could be just as simple as cleaning up the trashes that you see around you next time you go to the beach, even if it’s just one or two metals cans that you cleaned up , it’s still two metals cans that won’t end up in the sea !

-‘The change in ocean temperature, acidification (from absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide) and melting sea ice all disrupt marine ecosystems leading to harmful algae blooms, decreased fish stocks and the death of important organisms like coral and shellfish.’ So, yeps, reducing your carbon footprint also help the oceans, be it taking your bike instead of your car, using energy-efficient appliances or eating local.

Says no to chemicals. You wouldn’t think that something like cleaning your house with chemical product would affect the ocean right ? But eventually, your drainage water will end up into the sea. And theses chemicals have catastrophic effects on the sea and it’s wildlife.
‘household cleaners often contain volatile organic compounds that can lead to harmful algae blooms; chlorine bleach is highly toxic to fish; motor oil contains heavy metals that can end up in the fish we eat.’ .
Try to look for Greener alternatives 🙂

Do not buy products from endangered marine species .

– When snorkeling or diving, never touch the reef! Corals and other animals are fragile . And when boating, be careful about where you anchor.

There’s a lot more to talk about this topic,  but I think I already wrote quite a lot here. Keep an eye for another post on the subject soon though !
Have an amazing day,
Vic’

Into The Wild – Or some of the most amazing lines I ever read

IMG_1686

‘ But him and McCandless, at least they tried to follow their dream. That’s what was great about them. They tried. Not many do’ [Into the Wild]

When you talk about Christopher McCandless story [ told into ‘Into The Wild’ by Jon Krakauer] normally people will side into two groups. The one that think he was just a stupid idealist gone on a quest that turned wrong, or the one that realize that, even if he died young, at least He Lived.
If you know me a little, you’ll already know that I’m part of the latter group. McCandless at least lived. He followed his ideals, his ideas and lived what he believed in. He wasn’t just a philosopher lost in the realm of thoughts ( even if you’ll realize if you read the book ,or even watch the movie I guess, by his letters that has been shared and what people said of him, that he indeed was a thinker, an idealist) ,but he also had this sort of ‘living what you preach’ side. That’s what amaze me in this person, how he believed in and lived his ideas. I guess that not many do that.

Though the book is filled with amazing passages and quotes, there is one part of the book, that in my opinion, is simply Amazing. It his in a letter that McCandless wrote to a friend :

‘ So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounter with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. If you want to get more out of life, Ron, you must lose your inclination for monotonous security and adopt a helter-skelter style of life that will at first appear to you to be crazy. But once you become accustomed to such a life you will see it’s full meaning and it’s incredible beauty. And so, Ron, in short, get out of Salton City and hit the Road. I guarantee you will be very glad you did. But I fear you will ignore my advice. You think I am stubborn, but you are even more stubborn than me. You had a wonderful chance on your drive back to see one of the greatest sights on earth, the Grand Canyon, something every American should see at least once in his life. But for some reason incomprehensible to me you want nothing but to bolt for home as quickly as possible, right back to the same situation which you see day after day after day. […] Don’t settle down and sit in one place. Move around, be nomadic, make each day a new horizon. […]
You are wrong if you think Joy emanates only or principally from human relationships. God has placed it all around us. It is in everything and anything we might experience. We just have to have the courage to turn against our habitual lifestyle and engage in unconventional living.
My point is that you do not need me or anyone else around to bring this new kind of light in your life. It is simply waiting out there for you to grasp it, and all you have to do is reach for it. The only person you are fighting is yourself and your stubbornness to engage in new circumstances. […]
You will see things and meet people and there is much to learn from them. And you must do it economy style, no motels, do your own cooking, as a general rule spend as little as possible and you will enjoy it much more immensely. I hope that the next time I see you, you will be a new man with a vast array of new adventures and experiences behind you. Don’t hesitate or allow yourself to make excuses. Just get out and do it. Just get out and do it. You will be very, very glad that you did’
[ part of a letter from Christopher McCandless to his friend Ron, as figured in ‘Into the wild’ by Jon Krakauer ]

Even if you don’t leave and go wandering around as McCandless advices his friend to do, aren’t theses lines full of a sort of beautiful timeless wisdom ?
I won’t talk more ,and just let these few lines speak for itself.

Have an amazing day,
-Vic’

1am talk about fear and life

‘Many of them just couldn’t understand. Why would anyone need to take some quiet time to confront it’s own thoughts, to push away the dust of yesterday to have a better vision of tomorrow ? The obvious-for-me answer to that question was for many totally obscure and unknown. Living in a society where we spend our whole life running, this didn’t surprise me so much. We run, always faster and faster, never according to our self the right to stop and think. Aren’t we only running for our self ? Never stopping to avoid a confrontation with our own soul, are we scared to discover we are the monsters we’re afraid of ?’
[ Something I wrote for a project I’m currently working on]

What are you scared of ? When was the last time you stopped and consciously look your fears in the eyes ? Acknowledging them and maybe trying to understand what caused them, what was the root issue ?
When was the last time you just stopped and pondered quickly on your thoughts ?
In a world that rush more and more, we’re sadly less and less to actually take the time to witness our own thoughts, our own interiority, our own soul.

‘ To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all’ . [Oscar Wilde]

I know that I’m scared to not live. No, not afraid to die. In a way I’m not really afraid of death. Simply of not being alive before dying.
I’m afraid to simply exist, to go around as if I was a zombie.to go through life in a mist of sleep-walking-ness. To just go day after day and to not really create the life I want…

‘Remember, remember, this is now,and now, and now.Live it, feel it, cling to it. I want to become accurately aware of all I’ve taken for granted’ [ Sylvia Plath]

I’ve always thought that I’d rather have a short life where I’d feel insanely alive ,rather than a long life where I’d just wake up everyday to do the same thing, never really feeling like I even really woke up.

As I was talking to a friend though some time ago, I was wondering if anyone really is afraid of death itself, or is it always this fear of not having enough time ? not having enough time to create what we wish to ? To live what we want to live ?

I guess the ‘answer’ to all this would be to just simply : Be in the Now. Live unapologetically the life You wanna live. Dare being  Yourself.
Is it that easy really ? I think it is in concept, but that sometime we have to go through years of mental conditioning we have picked up from others and to de-cluster all this in a way. To really see clearer through our thoughts and mental patterns,to see what we really want […]and maybe that’s why it’s not always ‘easy’, but maybe in itself it is easy ,or at least simple : simply be yourself and live in a way that makes you happy.

Hmmm…Food for thoughts.

Seriously I often feel like I write and think that, but that yeah to do it in everyday life isn’t so easy and it takes some time ,that’s for sure. So yeps I’m still working on it all personally, and thinking it through, So maybe another post about that soon ?

Okay,enough 1am talk for today !

24 april- 12.17 am

I have to laugh at myself,at how little I got myself to post here while I write a bit everywhere ,in all sort of notebooks here and there ,and always have thoughts rushing into my head.
There’s this quotes in Dead Poet Society that says that ‘No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.’

Words, Ideas, are worth it.They changes the world, always did, always will. I’ll try to write more. And so should you,if anyone is reading this at the moment,I have one message for you : Your ideas and thoughts are just as worthy as anyone else’s. Never be afraid of letting your voice be heard. Too many time we shut up because we think that ‘no,it’s not worth it’, well if you keep your thoughts and ideas inside, how do you wish others to learn about it ? When sharing, people can not only learn from your ideas and expand their vision, but so will you,it’s beneficial to everyone around 😉 And yes I’ll try to take that advice myself and try to write more.

You know what also ? Life Always find a way. Someday we just feel like we never gonna make it. That it’s not even worth trying. No,if something really speak to your heart,if it’s something you really wanna do,go and do it.
I always have this thought that I don’t wanna wake up one day and realize all my life passed me by without me even being able to really create what I want. It’s always Now. We need to be brave enough to create the life we want. Life will always find a way. We need to believe in our-self and our projects, it’s never ever easy, but I do believe that one way or another,if you’re truly passionate about something, and never give up, you will make it happen.

A great video I’d like to share today is this Alan Watts talk , ‘What if Money was no object’
[Reallyyy worth watching ,it’s just 3minutes !]

Sooo yeah, I guess that it’s late and maybe I’ll realize tomorrow that what I wrote now won’t even have any sense… Happy earth day ( if it’s still the 23 april to you ,and Be Yourself and Go Create Your Life, no matter what day it is ahah)

“You cannot get…

Quote

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” -Jane Goodall

I was thinking about that yesterday. How much we change the world just by existing. How I look up to so many people just for how they chooses to live, always trying to be the best version of themselves.
Let’s choose to make the most of our time here.
